If you have not planned any goals for 2020 it is best you do it now. A lot of people utilize January for reviewing and organization because it’s a new year and 2020 starts a new decade; it seems that January being the beginning of the year makes you want to get things done. Unfortunately, when the month ends; you realize that you have not done anything; not even written anything or you have written down what you wanted to do in the new year and have not actually put a plan of action in accomplishing those goals.
It is definitely not a bad thing to want to plan and organize at the beginning of each year; it gives you 12 months, which is a realistic time period to getting things done. However, the thing is that you have to write things down and EXECUTE your plan. Executing a plan is one of the most difficult part of the planning process; part of executing a plan is actually doing the work and not just writing things down.
I am the queen of planning and I use to be horrible about executing and then I started to scheduling time on my calendar (and To Do List) actual tasks that needs to be done. You would be surprised as to how many people do not do this; they just write down what need to be done or what they want done and don’t go deeper in writing down how to actually completing the task. This was a Game Changer for me.
Example of this would be if one of your goals is to start a business write down and schedule time to research and create the items you need to start a business. Don’t just write down “think of business name” however put on your schedule 9am – 10am – Brainstorm names of businesses and 11am – 12 noon research business niche and target market. Once you have put items on your schedule make your scheduled time non-negotiable, it is important that you do this; once your make your time non-negotiable you will be surprised with how much work you get done.
If you need help with your planning process; the Living on Purpose Matrix Planner is a great tool to assist you in outlining and brainstorming about what you want for 2020 and beyond.
The best way to start is go to Printables Tab and download and print the Yearly calendar (the one that as 12 months on one page) and using the Notes Page or a blank piece of paper; think about and write down what you want to accomplish this year.
Begin by thinking about what you want in your finances, relationship, career, business the important to remember is that you must first take the time and sit down relax and really think about what it is that you want for your life in 2020. Review the yearly calendar and think about what you want to accomplish for each month of 2020.
Write everything down that you want to accomplish first, then take a day or two and now think about how you are going to accomplish them. These items will be your goals and within that list write any tasks on how you are going to go about to achieving these goals.
It is important to take your time with this task don’t rush thru it; take a look at what you have accomplished last year and what you have accomplished in prior years. Are you where you wanted to be in your life, in your business, in your career? If the answer is no, write down what it would take to get to your original goal (if the goal has not changed).
When writing your goals put a timeline next to it; this will allow you to determine the steps you need to take to reach the goals that you have just written. Be sure to write “REASONABLE” goals. An example of a reasonable goals would be starting a business in 2020. An unreasonable goal would be learn to new language in a day, make sense?
Let’s use starting a business in 2020 (this means you will have 12 months to start a business and if it’s done in less than 12 months would be great; but you have given yourself 12 months to start a business). These are the tasks that you would need to begin your business:
- Determine business niche
- Determine business name
- Determine type of business
- Determine who are your business competitors
Be sure to put a timeline next to these tasks. These tasks can be done in a month; they can be done in a week but that would put a serious strain on your time and your body. Give yourself a month to complete these goals; it may even take longer a month for some of the goals listed above.
These are just a few tasks that needs to be done; you can Google to research what you need to start a business. I use Google EVERYDAY; it is such a great tool.
I am firm believer in researching and writing things down this is all part of your planning process; planning is so essential in business as well as anything that you set out to do.
